SIA Security Careers: Roles, Licences and Entry Routes

Private-security work ranges from guarding premises to monitoring CCTV and protecting individuals. The right entry route depends on the activity, working environment and licence required. A course alone does not guarantee a licence or employment.

Security Guard

Security guards may control access, patrol premises, respond to incidents and protect property. Licensable contract security guarding generally requires the appropriate SIA licence. The security guard licence does not permit door supervision at licensed premises.

Door Supervisor

Door supervisors guard licensed premises when alcohol is supplied or regulated entertainment takes place. The work can involve access control, conflict management and incident response. A door supervisor licence also covers security-guarding activity.

Public Space Surveillance CCTV Operator

CCTV operators monitor people or activities to guard against disorder, damage or assault and may preserve or communicate evidence. The public-space-surveillance licence is role-specific; limited property-protection CCTV use can fall within other permissions.

Close Protection Operative

Close-protection operatives guard people against physical assault or injury. This is a specialist route with substantial training and responsibility. It should not be presented as an automatic progression from an introductory guarding course.

Key Holding and Cash in Transit

Key holders control access to keys or locking devices as part of security work. Cash-and-valuables-in-transit personnel guard property while it is transported in a vehicle designed for secure transportation. Each activity has its own licensing context.

Event Work

Not every stewarding role is licensable. Duties involving guarding, access control or disorder at licensed premises can require a door supervisor licence, while customer-service-only stewarding may fall outside licensing. Check the actual duties rather than relying on the job title.

A Realistic Entry Plan

Review live vacancies, identify the activities performed, use the official licence finder, choose an accepted qualification and compare providers. After training, apply for the correct licence and wait for approval. Build evidence of reliability, communication, accurate reporting and calm decision-making; employers may also request sector-specific experience.
