SIA Badge Guide: Using and Replacing Your Licence Card
‘SIA badge’ is a common informal name for the physical SIA licence card. It is not a separate qualification and there is no stand-alone badge course. The normal route is to complete the correct licence-linked qualification, apply to the Security Industry Authority and pass its checks.
What the Licence Card Shows
The card provides evidence of the licence issued for a particular security activity. A person’s name and licence details also appear on the public register, allowing employers and members of the public to verify current status.
When the Card Must Be Displayed
A front-line licence holder must normally wear the card where it can be seen while carrying out licensable activity. There are limited exceptions for covert activity, such as some store-detective or close-protection work; the licence must still be carried and produced when requested.
A Badge Does Not Cover Every Security Role
The activities permitted depend on the licence type. A door supervisor licence can cover security guarding, while a security guard licence does not authorise door supervision at licensed premises. CCTV permissions also depend on why and how the equipment is used.
Checking a Licence
Employers should check the official register before assigning regulated duties. A visual check of the card alone is not the strongest verification because licences can be suspended, revoked or expire.
Lost, Stolen or Damaged Cards
Use the SIA online account to request a replacement. The current replacement-card fee is £7, and the replacement will carry a different licence number. Follow official instructions promptly rather than continuing to rely on a damaged or missing card.
Renewal
Most SIA licences last three years. Renewal is an application, not an automatic extension, and some front-line licence types now require refresher qualifications. Begin by checking the current training and renewal guidance for your licence type.
Important Distinction
Completing an OHSC security course does not result in an SIA badge unless that exact programme is formally confirmed as an accepted licence-linked qualification. OHSC’s general online courses should be described as introductory education, not licensing training.
