How to Get an SIA Licence: A Step-by-Step UK Guide
An SIA licence permits a person to carry out a specific type of regulated private-security work in the UK. Training is important, but completing a course does not itself grant permission to work: the Security Industry Authority must approve the application and issue the appropriate licence.

1. Check Whether Your Intended Work Requires a Licence
Licensing depends on the activity you will perform, how you are employed and where the work takes place. Security guarding, door supervision, public-space-surveillance CCTV, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and key holding can all involve licensable activity.
2. Choose the Correct Licence Type
The licence must match the work. A door supervisor licence covers door-supervision activity and also permits security-guarding activity. A security guard licence does not authorise door supervision at licensed premises. A public-space-surveillance licence is required for CCTV work that monitors people or their activities for public-protection purposes.
3. Complete an Accepted Licence-Linked Qualification
Choose a provider approved by an appropriate awarding organisation and confirm the exact qualification before paying. Some learning may be delivered virtually, but licence-linked programmes can include compulsory classroom, practical and assessment elements; a general self-paced online security course is not a substitute.
4. Meet First-Aid and Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18. The SIA also checks identity, criminality and the right to work in the UK. For several front-line routes, candidates must hold a qualifying first-aid certificate that remains valid for at least 12 months when they begin the relevant training. Check the official rules for your licence type before enrolment.
5. Create an SIA Account and Apply
Apply through the official SIA online service, either personally or through an employer. Prepare the required identity documents and follow any instructions for identity verification. The SIA may request additional information depending on your residence history or circumstances.
6. Pay the Application Fee and Complete the Checks
The current fee is £204 for one licence. Most SIA licences last three years; the vehicle-immobiliser licence, applicable in Northern Ireland, lasts one year. Payment does not guarantee approval. The SIA considers the qualification, identity, criminality, right to work and other suitability information.
7. Wait for the Decision Before Starting Licensable Work
Do not undertake licensable activity until the appropriate licence has been granted. If approved, your details are added to the public register of licence holders and the SIA issues a licence card. Employers can check the register before assigning licensed duties.
Training and Licensing Are Separate
OHSC offers online security-management education for general knowledge and professional development. Unless an individual OHSC course expressly states otherwise with verifiable awarding details, it should not be treated as an SIA licence-linked qualification or a route to an SIA licence.
