Free Online Construction Courses

Explore construction management without paying a course-enrolment fee. OHSC currently lists two free, self-paced options: a general introduction to construction management and a specialist course examining machine learning in construction site management.

Both courses are Level 1, delivered online and designed for approximately 20 hours of study. They address different intentions, so this category page helps you compare them without duplicating the full course pages.

Construction Management Short Course

The Construction Industry

Gain an introductory view of the sector, common project participants and the way construction activity moves from planning to delivery.

The Role of the Construction Supervisor

Explore how supervisors coordinate work, communicate expectations and support safe, organised activity within the boundaries of their competence.

Introduction to Estimation in Construction Work

Learn why quantities, labour, materials, time and assumptions must be considered when preparing a basic estimate.

Planning for Equipment

Consider how suitability, availability, capacity, maintenance and safe use influence equipment planning on a construction project.

Machine Learning in Construction Site Management

Module 1: Introduction to Machine Learning in Construction

Understand how data-driven models can support predictions and decision-making, while recognising that output quality depends on data, assumptions and human oversight.

Module 2: Machine Learning for Project Planning and Scheduling

Explore how historical information may assist forecasting, sequencing and resource planning, without treating automated predictions as guaranteed outcomes.

Module 3: Machine Learning in Safety Management

Consider how pattern detection and monitoring may help identify potential risk indicators. Such tools support, but do not replace, competent safety management and legal duties.

Which Course Should You Choose?

  • Choose the construction-management short course for a broad introduction to the industry and supervision.
  • Choose the machine-learning course if your interest is specifically in digital applications for planning and safety.
  • Compare paid construction certificates and diplomas when you need greater depth.

Free Study and Optional Certificates

Enrolment, learning materials and required assessments are free. After successful completion, learners may optionally purchase either a CPD-accredited certificate issued through the CPD Standards Office or a QLS-endorsed certificate issued by the Quality Licence Scheme.

The two certificate routes have separate fee structures. QLS prices vary by course level and selected format, while CPD certificates follow their own pricing. Review current certificate options and charges. Neither is an Ofqual-regulated construction qualification, professional licence or site competency card.

Important Employment Information

These introductory courses do not demonstrate practical competence or authorise safety-critical work. Construction employers and projects may require particular qualifications, cards, supervised experience or role-specific training.

Frequently Asked Questions
