Emotional Intelligence and AI: Free Level 3 Course

Explore the relationship between human emotional intelligence and artificial intelligence with our free online course at Oxford Home Study Centre. This Level 3 programme examines self-awareness, emotional regulation and AI-supported feedback while keeping empathy, context and human judgement central to emotionally intelligent behaviour.

You can study online at your own pace, with an estimated duration of 200 hours and no formal entry requirements. You can also browse our complete course catalogue, compare the wider Artificial Intelligence course range, or explore our free AI courses.

What Does Emotional Intelligence Mean in the AI Era?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise, understand and manage your own emotions while responding appropriately to other people. It can influence communication, self-awareness, resilience, collaboration and decision-making.

AI tools can analyse language, sentiment or behavioural patterns and provide feedback, but they do not experience emotions or understand human context in the same way people do. For that reason, AI-supported emotional analysis should be treated as an aid to reflection rather than a replacement for empathy, judgement or meaningful human interaction.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand the foundations of emotional intelligence in an AI-influenced environment.
  • Explore self-awareness, empathy and emotional regulation.
  • Understand how AI-supported feedback can contribute to reflection and communication.
  • Recognise the limits of automated emotion and sentiment analysis.
  • Consider privacy, bias and context when AI is used with emotionally sensitive information.
  • Distinguish supportive technology from human interpersonal skill and professional judgement.
  • Recognise when emotionally sensitive situations require human or professional support rather than automated advice.

Who Is This Course For?

This course may be useful if you are:

  • a student or professional interested in emotional intelligence;
  • a team member, supervisor or manager developing communication skills;
  • working in HR, training or people development;
  • an educator exploring AI-supported feedback;
  • interested in the relationship between human behaviour and emerging technology;
  • looking for a non-technical introduction to AI and emotional skills.

The course is educational and does not qualify you to provide mental-health assessment, therapy or clinical advice.

Human Judgement, Empathy and AI

AI may identify patterns in text, tone or behaviour, but a pattern is not the same as understanding a person. Human communication is shaped by culture, relationships, history, intent and context, many of which may be missing from an automated analysis.

Responsible use means checking AI-generated feedback against your own judgement and the situation in front of you. When a decision affects another person, emotional intelligence remains a human responsibility.

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the definition, scope, and applications of emotional intelligence (EI) in the context of artificial intelligence.
  • Explore the evolution of emotional intelligence theories and how they intersect with AI technologies.
  • Learn about core EI components such as self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation, and their role in AI-driven systems.
  • Understand the differences between traditional emotional intelligence training and AI-powered EI tools.
  • Explore the basic principles behind AI models used for sentiment analysis, emotion recognition, and human–computer interaction.
  • Discover how AI systems can analyse human emotions to enhance decision-making, improve customer experience, and support mental well-being.

Optional Certificates

After successfully completing the course, you can choose whether you want documentary evidence of your learning. We currently provide two optional certificate routes:

  • CPD Accredited Certificate
  • Quality Licence Scheme Endorsed Certificate

What These Certificates Represent

CPD accreditation and Quality Licence Scheme endorsement are different from formal regulated qualification status. This course should not be presented as an Ofqual-regulated qualification or professional mental-health credential unless separate regulated status is explicitly confirmed.

A certificate can provide evidence that you completed the programme, but it does not guarantee employment, promotion, salary or professional status.
