A Short Introduction to Counselling

The 20-hour introductory course examines the purpose of counselling, how counselling differs from general guidance, qualities associated with effective counsellors and the importance of the helping relationship. It is suited to initial exploration and is not equivalent to practitioner training.

Diploma in Counselling Skills QLS Level 5

The Level 5 diploma is the more substantial option at 450 hours. Its syllabus includes foundations of counselling practice, the counselling process and helping relationship, communication and listening, emotional intelligence, counselling and coaching techniques, and managing conflict, anger and difficult emotions.

This programme gives you more time to examine theory and communication processes, but the level and certificate should not be interpreted as automatic eligibility to practise professionally. If professional counselling is your goal, investigate the training, placement, supervision, ethical and membership requirements of the relevant professional bodies before enrolling.

What Counselling Skills Can Support

Counselling-skills study can help you think more carefully about listening, empathy, rapport, questioning, boundaries and reflective communication. These capabilities may be relevant in education, management, community work, customer-facing services and other settings where people discuss concerns or make difficult decisions.

Knowing counselling concepts is not the same as being competent to assess or treat mental-health conditions. Learners must respect role boundaries, safeguarding duties, confidentiality limits and referral procedures. Urgent or complex needs should be handled by appropriately qualified services.

Certification

Certificate arrangements differ between these two programmes. The diploma fee includes its endorsed certificate, with an optional CPD-accredited certificate available to purchase separately. Neither completion certificate is a licence to practise, professional registration or an Ofqual-regulated counselling qualification. Confirm the exact requirements of any employer, education provider or professional body relevant to your plans.
