The primary functions and objectives of construction site management are examined in the first module, which also outlines the characteristics of an effective construction site layout plan. Candidates are familiarised with the fundamentals of planning a construction project and organising a construction site.

Learners are then guided through the process of evaluating the suitability or otherwise of any given site for a specific construction project. Criteria that must be considered when selecting a site are discussed, along with the different types of buildings, the various different building classifications and their respective characteristics/requirements.

Human resource management in construction is explored in module three, detailing each component stage of the wider HR process. Examples of which include procurement and selection, training and development, deployment and delegation and the importance of assigning the right jobs to the right people.

On-site logistics and the physical movement of site traffic are discussed in module four, which also examines the connection between traffic movement and workplace safety. The advantages of efficient site traffic management are also discussed, along with the cornerstones of a good site traffic management plan and helpful implementation guidelines.

The criticality of effective planning in construction projects is explored in the fifth module, in which candidates are presented with a detailed breakdown of the construction project lifecycle. Each component stage of the project life cycle is dissected and discussed - the initiation phase, the design and planning phase, and the execution and control phase.

Bringing the course to a close, module six provides a crash-course introduction to the functions and objectives of risk management. Typical threats and security issues in construction management are discussed, along with the site manager’s role in identifying, classifying, prioritising and mitigating risks at a variety of levels.
