The course begins by providing candidates with a detailed definition of the concepts of both management and leadership, along with their differences, similarities and interconnections. Common challenges to successful leadership are also discussed, along with the various applications of SWOT analysis – aka the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats matrix.

Module two outlines the importance of striving for continuous improvement and optimisation in a leadership position. Candidates examine several tools and techniques for measuring and assessing performance, along with the value of establishing realistic goals and the purpose of a personal vision statement.

The characteristics of a high-performing team are detailed and discussed in module three, which also explores the defining characteristics of an effective team. The advantages and potential drawbacks of working teams are also considered, along with everyday obstacles to effective team development and the importance of quality coaching.

In module four, candidates study the art of effectively and continuously motivating employees to perform to the best of their ability. Several key motivational tools are discussed, along with the connection between incentivisation and motivation, common reasons for demotivation in the workplace and more.

Module five guides candidates through the process of enhancing and refining their communication skills, along with extent to which communication plays a role at the heart of effective leadership. Several common communication barriers and obstacles are discussed, along with the difference between ‘hearing’ and actively ‘listening’.

In the sixth module, candidates are introduced to the concept of emotional intelligence and the five primary components of emotional intelligence - self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. Enhancing interpersonal relationships by acknowledging and understanding emotions and perceptions is discussed in depth.

The importance of swift and structured conflict resolution is discussed in module seven, in which candidates also consider the inevitability of conflict in a team working environment. The basics of anger management are also discussed, along with an overview of the ‘assertiveness formula’ and the importance of tackling all workplace conflicts head-on.

Concluding the course, module eight provides a detailed introduction to the functions and objectives of risk management. Candidates examine the various risk classifications, the fundamentals of enterprise risk management (ERM), risk analysis and assessment processes, risk identification and the characteristics of an effective risk management framework.
