This Medical Billing Intermediate Coding Course, is delivered over 10 modules:
Module 1 — ICD-10-CM Rules Mastery & Sequencing
This module revisits ICD-10-CM conventions and deepens skills in sequencing multiple diagnoses and comorbidities so coders can establish accurate primary and secondary listings; practical exercises reinforce coding rules. Emphasis is on complex case examples and using official guidelines to justify code choices.
Module 2 — ICD-10-CM: Cardiovascular & Respiratory
Focuses on common and complex cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, teaching code selection, laterality, and acute vs chronic coding distinctions; hands-on cases simulate chart-based coding. Learners practise linking clinical findings to the correct ICD codes for inpatient and outpatient settings.
Module 3 — ICD-10-CM: Endocrine, Renal & Neoplasms
Covers endocrine and metabolic disorders, renal conditions and neoplasm coding including staging and primary vs secondary site rules; includes tumor/oncology coding basics. Practical scenarios help coders manage sequencing and code abstractions tied to lab and pathology notes.
Module 4 — ICD-10-CM: Injuries, Musculoskeletal & External Causes
Teaches injury coding rules, fracture classifications, musculoskeletal diagnoses and how to capture external cause codes and intent; exercises include timeline and encounter sequencing. Coders learn to document encounter type and healing status for correct code assignment.
Module 5 — ICD-10-CM: OB/GYN, Behavioural Health & SDoH
Explores obstetric/gynecologic coding nuances, behavioral health diagnoses, and social determinants of health (SDoH) documentation and coding practices; practical vignettes build real-world competence. Emphasis on pregnancy sequencing, mental health coding conventions and capturing SDoH codes appropriately.
Module 6 — CPT® Foundations Refresher + E/M 2023–2025
Provides a targeted CPT refresher and a clear walkthrough of E/M updates from 2023–2025 so coders can apply time, complexity and documentation rules correctly; includes comparative exercises. Focused practice maps documentation to correct E/M codes for outpatient and telehealth encounters.
Module 7 — CPT by Specialty I: Primary Care, Dermatology & Minor Procedures
Breaks down CPT conventions and common procedure codes used in primary care, dermatology and minor office procedures with practical report interpretation. Learners practise selecting codes, adding modifiers and documenting procedure elements for accurate billing.
Module 8 — CPT by Specialty II: Orthopaedics & Musculoskeletal
Covers musculoskeletal procedure coding, fracture repairs, arthroscopy and related services with emphasis on operative report interpretation and correct CPT sequencing. Coders complete structured exercises that mirror orthopedic operative documentation and postoperative coding.
Module 9 — CPT by Specialty III: Cardiology, Radiology & Path/Lab (+ Ophthalmology intro)
Focuses on cardiology procedures, radiology imaging codes, pathology/lab coding and an introduction to ophthalmology procedures so coders can handle cross-discipline claims. Practical coding drills include imaging modifiers, diagnostic vs therapeutic procedures and lab specimen coding.
Module 10 — Modifiers, NCCI/MUE Basics & Clean Claims (Mini-Capstone)
Consolidates learning with a module on modifier usage, NCCI and MUE edit basics and preparing clean claims; includes a mini-capstone of multi-discipline case studies for end-to-end coding. Learners submit coded case work for review and practise edit resolution to improve claim acceptance rates.
