This three-unit online fashion design course introduces a wide variety of important theoretical topics, including the key principles and elements of design, how to work with colour, the importance of creating a sense of balance and an exploration of the recent history of the global fashion design industry.
This fashion course online consists of the following three units:
The opening course unit provides candidates with a useful overview of the fashion industry as it stands today, while at the same time exploring design trends and movements from important fashion eras. Movements from the 20th, 19th and 18thcenturies are explored and discussed, along with how the professional fashion designer must be able to predict and pre-empt future movements and trends.
Course Unit 2 turns attention to the most important principles and elements of design. Candidates are guided through the four primary design elements – textures, colours, shapes and lines – exploring each individually and as a component element in creating an overall concept. The design principles of emphasis, balance, harmony and repetition are also introduced and discussed at length, both independently and in conjunction with one another.
The final unit of the course introduces candidates to the most important considerations and fundamentals when it comes to using colour strategically as a fashion designer. From colour selection to ensuring total cohesion and avoiding clashes, candidates build a much deeper understanding of strategic colour use. Unit 3 also touches upon the basics of dress design.
