Key fashion design principles are then discussed in module three, examining the roles of Emphasis, Balance, Harmony and Repetition in design.  Candidates begin to build a picture of how to create and present works that reflect their signature aesthetic and creative vision.

Unit 4: Basic Rules for Dress Designing

Course module four details the most important rules of professional dress design, introducing a series of tools and techniques used in the design process.  Learners study the various different types of dresses and how to transform a creative vision into an attractive and functional garment.

Unit 5: Fashion Design: Colour & Dress Designing

The study of dress design basics continues into module five, which shifts attention to strategic colour selection and how to avoid clashes when combing colours.  The effect colour selection can have on the interpretation and appeal of the final garment is also discussed at length.

Unit 6: Fashion Illustration

Learners are then provided with a crash course introduction to the art of fashion sketching, along with the various tools and resources used by the professional designer.  Candidates learn how to create coherent sketches that can be interpreted by other designers and decision-makers

Unit 7: Working with Design Patterns

Course module seven covers the complexities involved in working with patterns in fashion design.  The overall impact specific patterns can have on a garment are discussed, along with the effective combination of different patterns and the importance of considering the cohesiveness of garment combinations.

Unit 8: Basics of Sewing (i)

A detailed introduction to essential sewing skills begins in module eight.  With no prior knowledge or skills required, candidates explore common sewing tools and accessories, seam sewing processes and other rudimentary hand sewing techniques.

Unit 9: Basics of Sewing (ii)                           

Additional sewing skills are introduced in module nine, which teaches candidates how to carry out basic garment repairs and alterations.  More advanced sewing techniques are discussed, along with how to work with various materials and associated challenges when sewing more complex garments.                                                                                

Unit 10: Stages in the Design Process

A complete breakdown of the fashion design process follows in module 10, discussing each component stage and its contribution to the final garment.  Candidates learn the importance of a structured design process - from initial inspiration through to production of the final garment.

Unit 11: Fashion Entrepreneur: Starting Your Own Fashion Business

Concluding the course, module 11 guides candidates through the process of starting a successful fashion design business from scratch.  Creating and developing a strong brand image is discussed, along with the basics of fashion business marketing and the importance of uniqueness as a fashion designer.
